Ben Roethlisberger has big expectations next year

Ben Roethlisberger Jerseys faced a crossroads in his career two years ago, as the Steelers asked him to transition from physical marvel to cerebral quarterback.

To Roethlisberger’s credit, he embraced the change, flourishing in Todd Haley’s offense which allows him to make better pre-snap reads and get the ball out of his hands faster.

The result has been a historically prolific aerial attack for stretches of the past two seasons.

“I feel like I’m playing my best football,” Roethlisberger said this week, via “That’s a big credit to the guys around me.”

The Steelers boast the NFL’s most dynamic wide receiver corps, with Antonio Brown Jerseys, Martavis Bryant and Markus Wheaton Jerseys stresses defenses at every level. The improvement in pass protection has gone overlooked, however, as offensive line coach Mike Munchak masterminded the lowest sack rate (1.66 per game) of Roethlisberger’s career.

Roethlisberger has led the NFL in passing yards per game in each of the past two seasons. Judging by his passer rating (94.5) and TD-to-INT ratio (21:16), one might reach the conclusion that Roethlisberger was merely a mediocre quarterback in 2015.

The reality is Roethlisberger passed better than ever, relentlessly attacking downfield while leading the NFL in plays of 40-plus yards and finishing second in yards per attempt (8.4).

By December, he became a football litmus test. Anyone doubting his prowess as a top-tier quarterback wasn’t watching the games.

With playmaking tailbacks Le’Veon Bell Jerseys and DeAngelo Williams Jerseys returning to join the league’s most dangerous wide receiver trio, Roethlisberger should be a trendy preseason pick for MVP honors next summer.

Lecavalier hopes to go out on high note with Kings

LOS ANGELES — Vincent Lecavalier Jerseys stepped in front of cameras and audio recorders Thursday wearing a Los Angeles Kings sweatshirt that looked so new someone must have grabbed it for him cheap motels in jersey city nj from the team store at Staples Center. His socks were Philadelphia Flyers Jerseys orange.

Asked if he has any previous connections with Kings players, Lecavalier summed it up in three words.

“I don’t, actually,” he said. “I don’t know anybody really, personally, so it’s good. It feels like the first day of school.”

Lecavalier is the new kid at 35. Los Angeles couldn’t be much newer to him as he begins the final chapter of his 17-season career with the Kings following a trade Wednesday that brought him and defenseman Luke Schenn Jerseys from Philadelphia for center Jordan Weal and a third-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft. Each was formally introduced to the media before the Kings played the Toronto Maple Leafs Jerseys.

Lecavalier will retire at the end of the season, providing an interesting subplot while the Kings attempt to make it to their third Stanley Cup Final in five years.

There isn’t much more for Lecavalier to accomplish. He won the Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning Jerseys in 2004 and has 411 goals in 1,170 regular-season games with the Lightning and Flyers.

But Lecavalier wants to end his career on a high note after a disappointing two-and-a-half seasons in Philadelphia.

“It’s really important,” said Lecavalier, who had 28 goals in 133 games with the Flyers. “All I want to do is help out this team as much as I can. I still have confidence in my game and what I can bring. The most important thing is winning in this organization. It’s not a guy or two guys; it’s everybody.”

How much Lecavalier can help remains to be seen. His acceptance of a lesser role was an integral part of the trade. Lecavalier has not played since Nov.12.

“I haven’t played in a while, but I’ve been practicing hard and I try to be as ready as possible for that first game,” Lecavalier said. “Obviously, short shifts is the key but I’m ready to go.”

Schenn vouched for Lecavalier’s approach while spending most of the season as a healthy scratch. Lecavalier played seven games for the Flyers under first-year coach Dave Hakstol.

“He’s handled it better than anyone possibly could,” Schenn said. “He’s come to work every day in practice. He’s the first one to do extra work in drills with the scratches and the hurt guys. In a situation like that, it’s probably pretty easy to walk around and not feel so good about yourself and probably bring your teammates down. He hasn’t shown that at all. He’s been nothing but a true professional.”

Schenn is expected to fill in immediately on the Kings’ third defense pairing. Unlike Lecavalier, Schenn knows several Kings players and is familiar with the organization because his brother, Brayden, was the Kings’ first-round pick (No. 5) at the 2009 draft.

“It’s funny how everything comes full circle,” Schenn said.

Lecavalier will wear No. 44, and Schenn chose No. 52.

“Pretty much all the good numbers were taken, I think,” Schenn said. “I was No. 5 in Kelowna [of the Western Hockey League] and No. 2 in the past, always, growing up, so I figured I’d just try and put them together and that’s all I came up with.”

Antonio Smith: Tom Brady a crybaby about getting hit

Tom Brady Jerseys and the Patriots have another quote to put on the bulletin board as the team prepares to face the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

This subtle jab comes thanks to Broncos defensive lineman Antonio Smith Jerseys.

When asked if Brady is a crybaby, Smith replied: “That would be an accurate statement. I’ve never seen any quarterback look to the referee right after he gets sacked more than Brady,” the defensive lineman said, per the Colorado Springs Gazette. “Every time he gets sacked he looks at the ref like, ‘You see him sack me? Was that supposed to happen? He did it a little hard. Please throw a 15-yard penalty on him. Get him fined.'”

Smith did offer up some praise of the QB after saying that Brady cries too much.

“He’s not going to rattle just because you hit him hard. I’ve tried over the years,” Smith said. “That’s what D-linemen think: ‘The harder you hit the quarterback, the better it will make it on the secondary.’

“With Brady, he’s a great competitor. You know it’s coming. He’s going to cry about getting hit, but he’s going to take the hit and keep going.”

Smith’s comments come after Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall Jerseys criticized Rob Gronkowski Jerseys, saying that the All-Pro tight end “pushes off” to get open.

While the Broncos have started off the week chomping at the bit, things were relatively quiet out of New England until Gronkowski provided his take on social media:

With the way Brady performs in the playoffs and fresh off carving up the Chiefs’ defense, it’s not too wise to give him a little extra added motivation — especially since he’s beaten Peyton Manning Jerseys 11 out of 16 matchups.

“We have spoken to Isaiah regarding his extremely disturbing and unacceptable social media decision. It was completely inappropriate and we have made him aware of our high level of disappointment,” the team said in a written statement. “Isaiah has apologized but also knows that just an apology is insufficient and that he must take steps to make a positive difference after a very negative and impactful post.”

“It was an extremely poor decision and I apologize for that mistake and for offending people,” Crowell said in a statement released by the team. “My values and beliefs do not match that image.”

The post went up after the police killings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Philando Castile in Falcon Heights, Minnesota, and before the killing of five Dallas police officers Thursday night.

Stephen Loomis, president of the Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association, also was critical of Crowell, telling TMZ Sports that the player’s “store-bought apology” was inadequate.

Cleveland police chief Calvin Williams said that Crowell apologized to him in a call Tuesday, and that Crowell said he was caught up in the emotion of last week.

Crowell wrote that he was “outraged and upset” by the killing of Sterling and Castile, and “outraged and saddened” by the killing of the five Dallas police officers. He called last week “an emotional and difficult week,” but said his post was wrong.

“We have to be better as a society,” Crowell said. “It’s not about color, it’s about what’s right and wrong. I was very wrong in posting that image. Every single life matters, every death as a result of violence should be treated with equal outrage and penalty.”

Crowell removed the image shortly after posting it, but the image still was shared on social media.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy, when asked if the league had any response, said: “The image was inappropriate and insensitive. He realized this, took down the post and has since apologized.”

Spurs’ Gregg Popovich bids emotional farewell to ‘irreplaceable’ Tim Duncan

SAN ANTONIO — Wearing a black shirt emblazoned with a picture of Tim Duncan with a caption underneath reading “Impossible Is Potential,” San Antonio Spurs Jerseys coach Gregg Popovich waxed poetic for 15 minutes Tuesday about the retirement of arguably the greatest power forward to ever play the game, and plans to make a pitch to Duncan to keep him working with the organization in some capacity in the future.

“It’s not a show of humility in any sense or form. People who grew up with me know me,” Popovich explained. “I would not be standing here if it wasn’t for Tim Duncan. I’d be in the Budweiser League someplace in America, fat and still trying to play basketball or coach basketball. But he’s why I’m standing. He’s made livings for hundreds of us, staff and coaches, over the years and never said a word, just came to work every day. Came early, stayed late, was there for every single person, from the top of the roster to the bottom of the roster, because that’s who he was, in all those respects.”

Sources told ESPN’s Marc Stein that the Spurs officially waived Duncan on Monday for salary-cap reasons. While the move was a mere formality, the club needed to do it to “waive and stretch” Duncan’s $6.4 million salary for the 2016-17 season so that it’s spread out over three seasons instead of one, which lessens the cap hit the team will take.

“I would not be standing here if it wasn’t for Tim Duncan,” Gregg Popovich said Tuesday in bidding a fond farewell to the Spurs legend. “I’d be in the Budweiser League someplace in America, fat and still trying to play basketball or coach basketball.” Kin Man Hui/The San Antonio Express-News via AP

Duncan exercised his player option for the upcoming season before the June 29 deadline, which means he’ll receive his full salary for the upcoming season despite retiring. Consider it a parting gift for Duncan, who gave so much for the NBA, the city of San Antonio and the Spurs organization.

“He’s irreplaceable. It can’t happen,” Popovich said. “We’re all unique. I guess each one of us is unique. But he’s been so important to so many people, it’s just mind boggling. To think that he’s going to be gone makes it really difficult to imagine walking into practice, going to a game, getting on the bus, taking him a piece of carrot cake — whatever it might be.

“You don’t see Timmy beating his chest as if he was the first human being to dunk the basketball, as a lot of people do these days. He’s not pointing to the sky. He’s not glamming to the cameras. He just plays, and we’ve seen it for so long it’s become almost mundane. But it’s so special that it has to be remembered.”

Popovich said Duncan is “too smart” to try his hand at coaching in retirement, but he plans to reach out to the former Spur to keep him involved in some capacity.

“I don’t think we’re going to see Timmy going up and down the sidelines much,” Popovich said. “But I have a notion he will at least listen to being involved, somehow or other, maybe even on a part-time basis. I’m certainly going to hit with everything I have to keep him around here as long as I possibly can because he means that much to everyone in the organization.”

Most Royals officials, and manager Ned Yost, said often recently that for Cain to even be mentioned in the same sentence for MVP as Trout and Donaldson demonstrates Cain’s evolution as a player.

“Lorenzo has played a major role in the success of our team,” general manager Dayton Moore said by phone. “He can impact a game with his ability to make plays on defense, on the bases and in the batter’s box. He is a special all-around talent.”

Cain experienced a breakthrough year in 2014 when he slashed .301/.339/.412 with five homers and 53 RBIs. But Cain crushed those numbers in ’15.

Cain (.838 OPS, 16 homers, 72 RBIs) was the Royals’ catalyst offensively. He led the team in steals (28), average (.307) and runs scored (101), and was second in OPS, doubles (tied with 34) and triples (six).

“I don’t think we even know yet what his ceiling is,” Yost said toward the end of the postseason.

Although Cain wasn’t a finalist for a Rawlings Gold Glove Award — a vote that baffled many, including Yost — Cain’s defense also propelled the Royals. Cain finished second among center fielders in Fangraphs’ defensive runs saved (18) to Rays’ Gold Glove winner Kevin Kiermaier (42). Cain finishes third in MVP race Lorenzo Cain Jerseys finishes third for 2015 AL MVP AwardA five-tool star for a dominant Royals team, Lorenzo Cain Jerseys finishes in third place for BBWAA’s 2015 American League MVP Award

Cain’s season also was historically memorable. Only three players in franchise history had a season with at least a .300 average, 15 homers, 25 steals and 100 runs scored. Before Cain accomplished the feat this year, only Carlos Beltran (2001 and ’03) and Johnny Damon (2000) achieved that rare line.

Cain, Trout (2012), Ian Kinsler Jerseys (2008), Rickey Henderson (1990) and Paul Molitor (1987) are the only players to achieve those marks in a season in 140 games or fewer.
